1. EDUCATION TRANSITION AND REFORM PROGRAMME - (ETRP)

This is an European Union funded project with an overall objective to contribute to a more efficient, equitable and sustainable education development. The programme is in its preparatory phase and will be fully operational by January, 2001.

2. EDUCATION SECTOR TRANSITION AND REFORM PROGRAMME (ESTARP)

This programme is funded by all major co-operating partners at a forum called Education Sector Development Group (ESDG) which bring together senior officials of Ministry of Education, Sport and Culture and donors. The forum prepares Sector Wide Approaches (SWAPs) which is an alternative to the current project funding approach. The ESDG discusses all programmes the Ministry of Education, Sport and Culture identifies for donor funding.

3. SOUTHERN AFRICAN CONSORTIUM FOR MONITORING EDUCATION QUALITY (SACMEQ) II

The Southern African Consortium for Monitoring Education Quality (SACMEQ) is a research project that is jointly undertaken by 15 African countries on monitoring of education quality and learning conditions in primary schools. Its target group is grade six children. SACMEQ is jointly run by countries in African and the International Institute for Educational Planning (IIEP). SACMEQ I was done in 1995 and a report was produced and SACMEQ II will be done this year beginning in 2001.

4. COMMERCIAL FARM AREAS CONSTRUCTION PROGRAMME

The programme is totally funded by SIDA and targets commercial farm schools.

5. COMMERCIAL FARM AREAS CHILDREN SCHOLARSHIP

The programme is totally funded by SIDA and targets children from commercial farms who cannot afford secondary school fees particularly girls. Currently, there are children benefiting from the programme.

6. UNICEF GENDER PROJECT

This programme is better known as Gender Equity in Education for Primary School and is totally funded by UNICEF. The main objective of the programme is to sensitize top officials in the Ministry on gender issues. It targets Regional Directors, Deputy Regional Directors,
